Here’s the step-by-step guide for you to fix the spout issue yourself.

1. First, Check Which Spout You Have

Before you pick your plumbing toolbox, you’ll need to identify what type of spout you’re working with. There are two common types -

• Slip-on Spout - Slides over a copper pipe and is secured with a set screw.
• Screw-on Spout - Twists directly onto a threaded pipe.

To check, you can take a close look at the underside of your current spout. If you see a small screw near the wall, that’s a slip-on. No screws? You’ve probably got a screw-on spout.

2. Get Ready With Your Tools

Here’s your quick checklist:

• Adjustable wrench or pliers
• Screwdriver (flathead or Phillips)
• Plumber’s tape
• Utility knife
• Silicone sealant & caulking gun
• Clean rag or cloth

You don’t need a full toolbox, just a few basics and a bit of patience.

3. Now, Remove the Old Spout

Pick your utility knife, and start by cutting away any caulk around the base. However, you need to be gentle around the spout so you don’t damage your tiles or wall.

• For slip-on spouts: Loosen the set screw underneath the spout with a screwdriver. Then pull it straight off the pipe.
• For screw-on spouts: Twist the spout counterclockwise. If it’s stuck, wrap a rag around it and use pliers for extra grip.

4. Pre-Installation Preparations

Before you proceed with the installation of the new spout, take a moment to prep the area. Wondering how? Take a look -

• Clean the exposed pipe or threads.
• Remove old tape, mineral deposits, and leftover caulk.
• Check the pipe for any damage or corrosion.

It’s simple! Setting up the area is important so that the new fixture fits well, seals tightly, and looks neat. If you skip this step, the problem could return sooner than you expect.

5. Install the New Spout

Are you ready to give your bathtub a fresh, new look? 

If you’ve got a screw-on spout

• Start with wrapping a plumber’s tape around the threads of the pipe.
• Hand-tighten the new spout onto the pipe.
• Use a cloth-wrapped wrench for one final (gentle) turn to secure it.

If you’re working with a slip-on spout

• Slide it onto the pipe.
• Tighten the set screw underneath.

Once you’re done, check that the spout sits flush against the wall and points straight forward because misalignment can lead to drips or leaks.

6. Seal It Up

To prevent water from sneaking behind the wall, apply a bead of silicone sealant around the base where the spout meets the wall. It’ll create a clean, waterproof seal, and it looks professional too.

7. Regular Maintenance Is Also Important

Done with the spout setup? Don’t ignore its maintenance -

• Wipe it down regularly to prevent buildup.
• Check for drips every now and then.
• Avoid hanging heavy things (like a shower caddy) on the spout.
